Spectra Energy's Algonquin Pipeline Expansion is Just a BAD IDEA

Biblical Disaster Waiting to Happen
What are they thinking?  There are just some ideas  that are just wrong, regardless of how you look at them, and Spectra Energy's expansion of the Algonquin Pipeline which when completed will be less than two hundred feet from the failing Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, buried under the Hudson River is just such a bad idea.   Actually, it is far worse than a bad idea, it is asking for a Double Whammy disaster of Biblical Proportions, that will cost hundreds of thousands, even millions of injured or dead people, and create damages running into the hundreds of Billions of dollars...even scarier, because Federal Law exempts Nuclear Power Plants from carrying adequate accident insurance, while at the same time denying citizens having nuclear accident insurance which would mean hundreds of thousands of people could lose their most valuable asset, their homes with no legal recourse.
The Price-Anderson Act became law on September 2, 1957, to cover liability claims of members of the public for personal injury and property damage caused by a nuclear accident involving a commercial nuclear power plant. The legislation helped encourage private investment in commercial nuclear power by placing a cap, or ceiling, on the total amount of liability each nuclear power plant licensee faced in the event of an accident. Over time, the “limit of liability” for a nuclear accident has increased the insurance pool to more than $12 billion.  NOTE-The estimated cost of cleaning up Japan’s wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant has doubled to nearly 22 trillion yen ($190 billion).
What was FERC thinking when they approved the ill-conceived routing for this pipeline extension and why are they allowing the project to go forward after the company's dismal failure in trying to install one of the key sections of pipeline that is less than a football field away from Indian Point ?Why hasn't both the NRC and FERC called for a halt to construction while a new EIS/Impact Study is done...their attempts to bury the pipeline under the river, laid upon the rivers bottom failed, the pipe sinking, Spectra has now decided they want to do a patch, tying a new high pressure line into an old low pressure line as a fix, falsely telling the community this is a perfect solution which presents no additional danger to the community and its citizens.  We all know that is a lie.

This same message has been used in the Dakota's for another ill conceived high pressure pipeline known as DAPL.  Let's examine a few things.

1.   FERC, the Army Corp of Engineers and the US EPA rerouted the DAPL route when it was decided that the pipeline would/could present a significant risk to the potable drinking water supplies of the community close to the state capital (predominately white).  The new route proposed and accepted saw the new route running through a similarly situated area inhabited by poor people and Indians...if the project presents a risk to one community's drinking water, how can it not present a risk to another community's drinking water and why is it ok to make one community live with a risk that was deemed to significant for another. (Environmental Racism rears its ugly head.)

2.   Citizens being asked to play host to the DAPL project, much like the citizens here in my community have been told the project is safe, that the pipeline will not leak, and if it does leak, the safety equipment and sensors would keep a leak to a minimum.   Despite these assurances, this month saw a 176,000 gallon leak sprung up on the DAPL...even more disturbing, the company's sensor that was supposed to notify them of a problem or leak failed.   If it were not for a property owner who was out for a walk noticing the leak, the situation would have been far worse.  Meanwhile, the clean up of the now polluted stream has begun.

In February of 2016 Indian Point had a serious leak of radioactive water into the Hudson River, just one example of the problems with this dilapidated aged reactor long past its safe operational lifetime, an it is now not a question of if, but when the reactors suffer a cataclysmic accident that will threaten millions of people downwind of the reactors.  Placing Spectra Energy's high pressure toxic fracked gas pipeline within 200 feet of reactors greatly increases the risk of a significant accident at the site which is why the Spectra project must be stopped.
First, having a high pressure pipeline so close to the failing Indian Point Reactor owned by Entergy presents a very attractive target for terrorists...two significant energy projects 24 miles from Manhattan is a target that those bent on intent of attacking America and our infrastructure are more than likely going to go after.  Yet, these terrorist/malcontent threats have not been evaluated by FERC or the NRC.
Secondly, what would the effects be if through attack, or pipeline failure there was an explosion in the pipeline similar to the one that occurred in Helena Alabama in November of 2016?  The Hudson River burning, hundreds of thousands if not millions of gallons of fracked gas rushing downstream, polluting the river, and killing wildlife along the way.
Further, would the debris from such an explosion create serious issues involving Indian Point's water intake system, and if so, how does Entergy plan to cool the reactors if they have to shut down their access to the Billions of Gallons of water they need each day to keep the reactors from melting down?
NOTE-2.5 billion gallons/day -- twice NYC’s total daily consumption.

Lastly, what effect on the interior of the reactors would occur if debris from the pipeline, fracked gas from the pipeline were being sucked in from the water intake? Would the reactors be damaged, could these pollutants and debris change the interior atmosphere of the reactors enough to cause an explosion of the reactors, creating and instantaneous Fukishima on the Hudson which would then put over 25 percent of America's population in harms way?

Alarmist?  Before you make that accusation, let's look at what a 20 inch high pressure gas line explosion looks like.  Keep in mind, the Spectra Algonquin Pipeline is TWICE this size in diameter.

Ask the NRC if our Emergency Responders are prepared to handle and explosion of this magnitude with the flames melting the steel roofs of Indian Point's non-hardened spent fuel pools.   If those roofs collapse into pools, causing the spent fuel rods to become unstable, what kind of a nuclear chain reaction would occur?  Further,  new pipelines are actually FAILING at a rate three times greater than their older predecessors installed in the 1950's.  Much like Indian Point, it is not a question of if, but when this Pipeline has a significant life threatening accident.   If that accident occurs in close proximity to Indian Point the probability of a Fukushima-on-the-Hudson that would make NY City uninhabitable millennia is almost a certainty.

Spectra's Safety record at best is checkered, and they are not immune to explosions in the 22,000 miles of pipeline they operate across America and Canada.

A DRAMATIC RUPTURESpectra’s most recent pipeline accident was the dramatic rupture of an auxiliary pipe along its Texas Eastern Pipeline in Little Rock, Ark. on May 31. The buried line, which crossed the Arkansas River near the Clinton Presidential Center, was not in use at the time, but contained four million cubic feet of natural gas that exploded with such force that churning water boiled up high into the air across the span of the river. Eyewitness Tony Cassady, who lives nearby, said the gushing waters had settled back somewhat by the time he managed to snap the photo above.
It is time to just say no, and put and end to this doomed to disaster project...if Spectra Energy wants to petition FERC for a new alternative route, let Spectra do so, but allowing the Spectra project to continue on its current route that brings it within 200 feet of Indian Point must be stopped.

A closing question...if FERC feels it imperative for pipelines to be at least 500 feet from homes, why is it OK to have such a dangerous project less than 200 feet from a Nuclear Reactor?

DAPL Not so Safe After All...Suffers Significant Leak...Company DID NOT KNOW.

Kelcy Warren, Energy Transfer CEO
The Army Corp admitted that there was a serious danger to the potable water supplies of a community when the pipeline's original routing took it through a predominantly WHITE community up by the state capital.   Reroute the pipeline away from this White community to a more rural area populated by POC, and suddenly the Army Corp and the companies involved in building the Pipeline want you to believe that moving the pipeline to a different area suddenly makes it SAFE...who are we kidding here?  If the pipeline presents a potential risk to human health in what area, it presents a risk to human health in ALL AREAS.

For months, the Water Protectors and those who support them have fought a brave fight against over whelming odds, and won a major battle in the fight to stop the pipeline.  Now it seems that Kismet is stepping in and giving these brave patriots yet another helping hand in their fight...absolute concrete proof that the pipeline IS NOT SAFE, does threaten the potable water supplies in their community if this project is allowed to move forward.

Kelcy Warren of Texas-based Energy Transfer Partners said in a interview on November 16th:
Also, on each side of the lake, there’s automated valves that, if in the very, very unlikely situation there were to be a leak, our control room shuts down the pipe, encapsulates that small section that could be in peril.
So, that’s that’s just not going to happen. Number one, we’re not going to have a leak.
OK...lets fast forward to THIS WEEK!  From CNN:
A spill has occurred 150 miles from Cannon Ball, North Dakota, where protesters have fought construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline.
State officials estimate 4,200 barrels of crude oil, or 176,000 gallons, have leaked from the Belle Fourche Pipeline in Billings County.
Of that amount, 130,000 gallons of oil has flowed into Ash Coulee Creek, while the rest leaked onto a hillside, said Bill Suess, spill investigation program manager at the North Dakota Department of Health.
It would be nice if the Federal Agency who approves these kinds of projects (FERC) were actually honest with the stakeholder communities...they are not.  Much like other agencies such as the NRC, they state at Public Meetings and Hearings a basic lie..."There is no immediate danger associated with this project."  Immediate danger means in the RIGHT NOW, verse something that will more than likely occur a year, five years or ten down the line, such as the leak that has spilled into a creek contaminating both land and water.  They further compromise their integrity in the permitting process by putting forth a Cost Benefit Analysis that ALWAYS SIDES WITH THEIR PERMITTEE'S, the permittee's are supposed to be protecting you the stakeholders from.

I have no doubt that Kelcy Warren (CEO) will claim the leak to be minor, and rare.   He then will go on to claim that there will be no long term harm to the environment or human health as a result of the leak.

Before he continues on with his diatribe, let's interrupt with a few inconvenient facts.  The size of the spill was greatly lessened because a property owner discovered the spill and notified the proper authorities...that's right, a property owner.   Had this accidental discovery on the part of a property owner not occurred, this spill would have quickly become one of the worst spills in the United States of America.   Some would accuse me of overstating the MAGNITUDE of the potential spill, but am I?   What the company would prefer you not know, why I make this claim...the sensor(s) that are supposed to inform the company they have a leak FAILED, did NOT WORK.   The company had zero clue the pipeline was leaking.

This fact immediately tells us that the companies involved in this and other pipeline projects have a woefully inadequate MAINTENANCE PROGRAM on these pipelines.  A sensor can be replaced at a sensor cost of UNDER $18...obviously, the fact that the sensor was not replaced in a timely fashion shows a serious failure on the part of FERC and the Oil Industry to put in place a safety and maintenance program that will effectively mitigate the extent of damage when their pipes leak, and leak they will.   Perhaps if the Oil Industry placed public safety first, they would not commission studies that look for ways to make the cheapest sensors, but instead look for ways to make the BEST SENSORS that money could buy.

As relates to the DAPL project...it is my hope that the Water Protectors demand a full and complete study of failed sensors as a part of the new EIS that the Army Corp is promising.  It is also hoped that they file a formal complaint with FERC against the entire industry that demands a full and complete investigation into failing sensors, and the industry's inadequate Maintenance programs for pipelines nationwide.

Water Protectors (For Now) HAVE WON...Army Corp Denies Easement to BIG OIL...NO DAPL

Congratulations WATER PROTECTORS
The Army Corp has spoken, and for now the Dakota Access Pipeline has been stopped, but it has not been killed!  Today, environmental activists, the Indian Nation, and Water Protectors have won a huge battle, and should bask in that win.   However, we must all be vigilant, and it is hoped that the protesters will continue their protests until the Army Corp has actually chosen a different route for this troublesome project.

Supposedly, there will be a full EIS (Environmental Impact Study) which could take months, even years.  Problem is, Donald J Trump will probably have something to say or do about this decision on his first day in office.   If everyone has already gone home, and this decision by the Army Corp gets quickly reversed, all of those who have sacrificed, who made this win possible will have won the battle, but in the end will lose the war.

For those here in NY, we celebrate with the Water Protectors tonight, but tomorrow we have to double our efforts on stopping the Spectra Pipeline that is being buried in the Hudson River less than 200 feet from the dangerous, dilapidated, failing Indian Point Nuclear Reactors which are owned by a company known for being less than honest in their dealings with the public...Entergy should have all of its Nuclear Reactors Shut down and decommissioned!

Army Corp, Federal, State and Local Governments Sell Out DAPL Protesters, Water Protectors

In what could be the last stand for the DAPL Protesters and Water Protesters, the Army Corp has sold them out, given them just days to vacate Army Corp land and leave their encampment or face Federal Charges.  In what can only be classified as a sell out to BIG OIL, the Army Corp issued the following statement.
These PEACEFUL Protesters Are Not The Violent Ones
“This decision is necessary to protect the general public from the violent confrontation between protestors and law enforcement officials that have occurred in this area, and to prevent death, illness, or serious injury to inhabitants of encampments due to the harsh North Dakota winter conditions.”
First, leave no doubt...THE VIOLENCE was not caused by the protesters and "Water Protectors" but by the contractors, their private security, and local/state law enforcement.  Secondly, find it very odd that Oil Field workers can live in campers, survive the harsh Dakota winters, but the Army Corp acts as of those protesting the DAPL are incapable of preparting their encampment for the coming winter season of cold and snow.   Lastly, and most importantly, the Army Corp's decision conveniently would allow  Energy Transfer Partners who merged with Sunoco to avoid financial ruination to complete the pipeline just in time to fulfill their contractual obligations to start pumping product through the line in early January.  Profits ahead of people...specifically, Profits ahead of Native Americans and their rights under Treaty!   Give BIG OIL what it wants, and maybe we will talk about some damages after the project is up and running....PROBABLY NOT.

This people CANNOT GO UNCHALLENGED!  We as a nation only have nine days to prepare, if necessary "A Last Stand" against the DAPL...Doing that means bodies! that means donations of money, food, and WINTER ACCOMMODATIONS...as in heaters, campers, firewood, and warm clothes.  The time has come for "We The People" to rise up in large numbers, time for us to exercise our 1st Amendment Rights to stand up to this rape of a people, stand up to this rape of our environment.

Black Friday Post Thanksgiving Thoughts

First, a special shout out to Dianne, and her fine staff at OD's here in Nyack for making our Thanksgiving Show one for the memory books.   If you are looking for incredible, locally sourced, GMO and Glutin free organic dining, this is the place to be.   Thank you Diane, staff, and our very own "Rockland Forager" for putting out a Thanksgiving spread worthy of the Pilgrims whom we are celebrating.  The show, and all the guests had a great time, and the sense of community share with all the guests is one that brought with it some memories I will carry on though out my life.

Black Friday...early reports are positive for retailers, which saddens this writer.  There were efforts online (Twitter) to generate a "#BoycottBlackFriday" movement, but alas that effort to make a statement about the unacceptability of Donald J. Trump as the 45th President fizzled out, unable to generate enough traction to get noticed.   That said, I will be skipping the day, and also will not participate in the Internet equivalent held this upcoming Monday.    Trump has divided America, he lost the Popular Vote, and I can never accept him as my President, so will be participating in any action to keep the negative focus on this vile excuse for a human being.

The DAPL protests are continuing, even on Thanksgiving.  Sadly, so does the push to complete the project before the end of the Calendar year.   In even stranger news, Energy Transfer Partners has just announced a merger with Sunoco Logistics Partners, another one of the vile partners in this Pipeline Project which is doomed to poison the drinking water in the area...it is noted here, that there is a Pipeline leak of significance every 30 hours here in America.

We here at "Voice of Reason" hope everyone had a beautiful Thanksgiving filled with great food and family.   Remember to do something for those less fortunate than you on this special weekend.

NOTE-Just announced that Florence Henderson of "Brady Bunch" fame has passed away of heart failure...she will be missed.

War Declared on DAPL Protestors! 25 Degrees, Police ATTACKING PROTESTERS With Water Cannons!

OMG...just breaking on Twitter...President Barack Obama, you MUST STOP THIS!   You cannot sit on the sidelines your last 60 days in office.   America is turning its lonely eyes to you!

ALL CITIZENS...The Water Protectors are asking every American to call the Morton County Police and file a formal complaint!    Their number is 701 667 3318.   Being attacked by water cannons at night in fridgid 25 degree temperatures is far beyond the pale...PLEASE MAKE A CALL!

OUTRAGEOUS! It's 25° in North Dakota, the police are using water cannons, rubber bullets and gas grenades.

Dakota Pipeline War UPDATE...Energy Transfer Partners CEO Kelcy Warren, "PROFIT OVER PEOPLE"

“There’s not another way. We’re building at that location,” Energy Transfer Partners CEO Kelcy Warren told The Associated Press as the company digs in its feet, plans legal action to force his will on Native Americans...the question is, WHY?

The Army Corp has not granted an easement under the Missouri River in North Dakota near a Native American tribe’s reservation, claiming more negotiation and discussion is needed to find COMPROMISE between the parties.
Problem is, Kelcy Warren and his company have contract OBLIGATIONS to fulfill starting in January of 2017 and in his mind, that reality should take precedent over people, and safety.

Rather than having dialogue it seems Energy Transfer Partners is counting on their own very not so SECRET WEAPON, one "NOT MY PRESIDENT" Donald J Trump who is HEAVILY invested in the project.   That coupled with CEO Kelcy Warren's heavy investment of over $100,000 in Donald J Trump's Presidential Campaign suggests pay to play and corruption at the highest levels of our political process, and the corporate fossil fuel industry.

Pretending an interest in finding compromise, Ceo Kelcy Warren suggests he wants a PRIVATE MEETING with Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Dave Archambault in the hope (one has to think) of buying him off with a few beads and trinkets...sorry Kelcy, but those days are gone forever.  Preferring to have dialogue through proper channels that will give ALL STAKEHOLDERS THEIR PROPER VOICE, Dave Archambault has so far declined a request for a private meeting.

We at "Voice of Reason" will continue to update our readers on this important news story.

NOTE-Forbes lists CEO Kelcy Warren as the 150th richest man in the world with personal wealth of over $4 BILLION, making him, like Trump part of the upper one percent of the one percent.

NOTE-Contrary to Kelcy Warren's claims, pipelines are not near as safe as he would have you believe!  Independent analysis of federal records found that since 1986, oil and gas pipeline leaks, spills and other safety incidents have resulted in nearly $7 billion in damages, more than 2,000 injuries and more than 500 deaths.

Kelcy Warren of "Energy Transfer Partners" Now Stooping To Bullying

We here at "Voice of Reason" have been giving extensive coverage to the Dakota Pipeline protests, humbled by the efforts of the Water Protectors and those who are supporting them as they stand up against the egregiously neglect corporate monsters who are putting profits ahead of environmental protections, and what is best for the communities being forced to play host to another dangerous pipeline.  Too often, despite false assurances that these projects are safe, a horrendous accident is not a question of if, but a question of when.

The money changers who have funded this project want the pipeline up and operational by the beginning of the New Year...in an attempt to meet this goal, and to thwart the will of the people it seems that Kelcy Warren  CEO of "Energy Transfer Partners" based out of Texas has decided to BULLY the opposition by going into Court, asking a Federal Judge to force the Army Corp of Engineers to approve the last permit needed to complete the project and make it operational.   He is claiming the permitting delay is a direct result of the "Obama Administration and their political interference in the process, calling it "a flagrant disregard for the law.

Take action...give Energy Transfer Partners a piece of your mind by calling their corporate headquarters and leaving Kelcy Warren a message!   Their number is (214) 981-0700

You can also send them your thoughts via email:  Vicki.Granado@energytransfer.com

For those who can afford it, would also suggest sending them a chunk of coal as an early message from Santa Claus!
